In an effort to catch up with China for influence on the African continent, the Japanese vice minister of economy, trade and industry recently announced that the country was looking for investment opportunities across the continent. Japanese investments are expected to come via the country’s state owned oil and mining firm, or via joint ventures with local African businesses. The minister also noted that Japan was interested in developing Africa’s infrastructure in tandem with investments in extractive industries. Read
